Monday Mini Food Artist: The Mouse Market

This week's Featured Mini Food Artist is Mo of The Mouse Market!

From her shop profile: People often wonder why I choose to spend an inordinate amount of my time creating itty-bitty foods that I can’t eat, and while I would love to spin a thrilling tale of generations upon generations of my family handcrafting miniature inedibles for kings and queens, the reason is actually quite simple: because I love it.

When I was a child, my parents built a dollhouse that was fashioned after the cozy tree house of my favorite storybook squirrel, Miss Suzy, and the miniature obsession flame was ignited. It wasn’t long before I decided to tap into the miniatures market myself, and in grade school I spent a great deal of time trying to persuade my classmates to buy my handmade animal figurines when I should have been paying attention to the math lesson. The animals had tiny little zippers engraved down the center of their tummies, and in a spurt of third grade imagination untethered by the chains of traditional spelling, I decided to dub the business Zippirs. Sadly, Zippirs failed to become the lucrative animal figurine empire I had envisioned, but luckily, my miniatures obsession has since found a new home, The Mouse Market.

Today, I combine my love of miniatures with my training as a pastry chef and a graphic designer to create detailed, realistic foods in 1/12 scale, and perhaps one day, when the public is truly ready, I may reintroduce the Zippirs.

She has also been featured in Artisan in Miniature (Issue 22), The Columbia Tribune, and Vox Magazine.

Monday Mini Food Artist: Alliesminis

On select Mondays, we will feature a member of the Miniature Food Jewelry on Etsy Team. Our first week's feature is Allie of Allies Minis!

From her shop profile: I believe that what sets my miniature food apart from all the rest is the immense amount of detail I put into each and every piece I create. Each mini has a piece of my heart and I have a lot of heart to give!

I told my second grade students about Allie's Minis and now they all believe I am famous. It’s funny how you see your life going down one path (being a teacher) and it can veer off (becoming a miniaturist) when you least expect it. I think the most amazing part of creating Allie’s Minis is that it gives me the flexibility to be the creative mini-making artist I am, and be the fun-loving, hard-working second grade teacher I strive to be everyday.

Another interesting factoid: she has been featured in the July 2010 issue of American Miniaturist.

June Miniature Food Jewelry Challenge: Ice Cream Social!

It's time for the Miniature Food Jewelry on Etsy Team's first monthly challenge: Ice Cream Social! Show us your best, funnest, most whimsical creation, whether it be as simple as a single waffle cone with a scoop of ice cream, or a twelve-scoop monstrosity with whipped cream, nuts, sprinkles, and cherries on top! Feel free to let your imagination run wild with this one.

Since this is our first challenge, let's lay out the "rules":
1. Members have until June 29th to create their jewelry or accessories.
2. Please tag your creation with "6mfjechallenge" when you list it in your shop (most of this will remain the team tag for challenges- the only thing that will change will be the month's number).
3. On the 30th or 1st of next month, the challenge creations will be revealed here on the blog!

That's it! Start screaming for ice cream, and have fun!
